Georges Bizet

This composer of what is today the most famous French opera of the 1870s, Carmen, enjoyed little success during his lifetime as an opera composer although he made significant innovations.

1838Born in Paris on October 25, the son of a voice teacher and a pianist.
1848Admission to the piano studio of Antoine François Marmontel at the Paris Conservatoire; private instruction in music theory.
around 1849Acquaintance with Gounod.
1853Enters Fromental Halévy’s composition class. During his lifetime he will make his living by giving piano lessons, producing piano reductions and transcriptions, and performing as a rehearsal pianist.
1855Symphony in C major.
1856First prize together with Charles Lecocq in a competition announced by Jacques Offenbach.
1857He wins the Grand Prix de Rome with his cantata “Clovis et Clotilde.” Subsequent three-year residency in Rome.
1859–60“Ode Symphony” Vasco de Gama.
1860–68Composition of the “Roma” Symphony.
1863Relatively unsuccessful premiere of the opera “Les Pêcheurs de perles” (“The Pearl Fishers”) at the Théâtre-Lyrique to a libretto by Carré and E. Cormon; it helps establish the newly evolving genre of the drame lyrique.
1867Relatively unsuccessful premiere of “La jolie fille de Perth” (“The Fair Maid of Perth”) at the Théâtre-Lyrique.
1872Premiere of “Djamileh” at the Opéra-Comique. Incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s tragedy “L’Arlésienne,” out of which develops the “L’Arlésienne Suite.”
1875Premiere of “Carmen” at the Opéra-Comique with its theme of a femme fatale and ‘realistic’ features; it is received in Paris with restraint, achieving its breakthrough only in Vienna; Bizet dies in Bougival near Paris three months earlier on June 3.

Egon Voss (Editor)

Dr. Egon Voss, born in 1938 in Magdeburg, did a secondary school teaching degree in Detmold (Staatsexamen in 1961) and studied German, philosophy and pedagogy in Kiel and Münster (Staatsexamen 1964). He subsequently studied musicology in Cologne, Kiel and Saarbrücken and completed his doctorate in 1968.

In 1969 Voss became a scholar at the Richard Wagner Complete Edition in Munich, since 1981 he has been its Head. From 1989 to 1990 he was the dramaturg at the Théȃtre la Monnaie/de Munt Brüssel, and from 1996 to 2002 a lecturer at the post-graduate programme “Textkritik” at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. Voss is a member of the advisory board for the edition “Richard Wagner, Sämtliche Briefe” as well as the journals “wagnerspectrum” and “The Wagner Journal”. He has published several books and a great many essays on Wagner, Schumann, Bach and other composers and musicological topics.

Andreas Groethuysen (Fingering)

Prof. Andreas Groethuysen, born in 1956 in Munich, studied music with Ludwig Hoffmann in Munich and, on a scholarship from the “Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes”, with Peter Feuchtwanger in London.

After several years as a soloist, Groethuysen formed a piano duo with Yaara Tal, which has now become the focus of his artistic work. The duo regularly performs in many European countries, in Israel, China, North and South America. In exclusive cooperation with SONY CLASSICAL the internationally acclaimed piano duo has released a great many CDs – 28 to date – almost all of which have been awarded prizes.
