Sonate op. 119
La sonate tardive pour violoncelle de Prokofiev est indissociable du nom de Mstislav Rostropovitch. En 1947, lors d’un concert à Moscou, le violoncelliste alors âgé d’à peine 20 ans suscita un tel enthousiasme auprès du compositeur que ce dernier lui promit spontanément une œuvre entièrement taillée à sa mesure. En juin 1949, tous deux mirent ensemble la dernière main à cette sonate en duo particulièrement exigeante techniquement qui fut jouée pour la première fois en ce même mois de juin devant le comité d’État pour les affaires artistiques. En vue de l’impression, un passage particulièrement périlleux à la fin fut contrebalancé par une alternative plus facile – ce qui contribua sans doute pour beaucoup à la diffusion de la sonate.
La présente édition Henle propose pour la première fois ce chef-d’œuvre pour violoncelle du 20e siècle dans une version établie sur la base de toutes les sources authentiques. Dans sa préface, le spécialiste de Prokofiev Simon Morrison éclaire la genèse et la publication de la sonate dans le contexte de la politique culturelle soviétique.

Dr. Annette Oppermann, born in 1965, trained as a music dealer in Frankfurt am Main and studied historical and systematic musicology as well as modern German literature at Hamburg University.
From 1993 to 1996 she worked as an editor for Sony Classical International in Hamburg; from 1996 to 1999 she was a doctoral candidate in the postgraduate programme Textkritik at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, in January 2000 she earned her doctorate with a dissertation on “Musikalische Klassikerausgaben” (Hans-Joachim Marx, Hamburg). From 2000 to 2008 she worked as a research associate at the Joseph Haydn-Institut in Cologne, and was editor of the Oratorio “Die Schöpfung” in the Complete Edition of Joseph Haydn’s Works. Since February 2008 she has been an editor at G. Henle Publishers in Munich, with a particular focus on vocal music, chamber music and books.
